Poker Variations

Straight Poker

Said to be the most veteran variation of the game. Each player is dealt a hand and everyone bets. Players can raise any re-raise as many times as they see fit. The source of the game is known as Primero, which in turn, evolved to three-card brag, a popular gentleman's card game from the time of the American Revolutionary War and is still played in the United Kingdom in current times. This game is the most simple poker variation and allows for very little strategy, if at all.

Stud poker

This variation of Poker is thought to be the second oldest variation of the card game. Cards are dealt face-down or face-up per round. Such rounds are also known as "streets". When poker games changed to have 5 cards instead of three, cards were usually dealt one by one, either face-down or face-up. This allowed betting rounds between each deal. The most popular game of this variant is seven-card stud. In this game, each player is dealt two extra cards (four face-up and three face-down). The player needs to choose the best 5 cards hand out of the 7 cards.

Draw poker

Each player is dealt a complete hand with all cards faced down. The players then bet. After the betting round, players may attempt to improve their hand by replacing cards they don't want with new cards from the deck. The most popular game of this variant is Five-card draw.

Community card poker (flop poker)

This is actually a variation of Stud. Players are dealt a partial hand of cards (face-down). The rest of the cards are dealt face-up to the center of the table for all players (community cards).  Players can use each of the community cards to make the best possible 5-card hand. Texas holdem and Omaha are the two most popular variants of this family.
